The Retreat Center Food Service Assistant Cook assists the Food Service Director either in the preparation of meals or as the lead cook for meals in the absence of the Food Service Director including Fircreek Day Camp and After School Adventure. The primary job function is to provide high quality food preparation and service in support of the ministries taking place at The Firs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Assists the Food Service Director for some meals and is the lead cook for other meals while directing and training other cooking staff. Will maintain a high level of food preparation and presentation.
Responsible for maintaining a clean kitchen and dining room environment while meeting all state and local health regulations pertaining to Food Service.
Responsible for maintaining and enforcing an appropriate work environment in the kitchen. That includes proper dress, behavior, language and music that are honoring to God and consistent with The Firs ministry objectives.
Maintains the proper storage of all food according to local and state health standards.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES – Responsible for:
Part time seasonal employees, typically young adults or older teenagers, who are assisting in meal preparation or working in the dish room and dining room during meals that the Assistant Cook is the lead cook.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A mature Christian with a ministry minded vocational perspective
Previous cooking experience preferably in an institutional or business setting. On the job training is available.
Minimum education: High School graduate.
Able to cook well and able to plan and prepare meals appropriate to a wide range of constituency—youth to adults
A basic understanding of a retreat center food service operation and a desire to serve God within that context
Have strong work references preferably in the area of food service
LANGUAGE SKILLS – English
Basic understanding of the fundamentals of cooking.
Understanding of basic health and safety requirements as they pertain to a food service environment
Knowledge of basic kitchen appliances and equipment
CERTIFICATES – Food Handler’s Card (mandatory), First Aid/CPR certification (optional)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regularly lift up to 25 lbs
Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
Work some part of most weekends
Able to pass a background check and drug screen.
Maintain high level of food quality with positive guest feedback
Works independently and is a self-starter
Adequately supervise food service personnel
Maintain positive, clean and productive work environment
